Blazers Looking to Improve Into Holiday Week

Cumberland encountered three opponents over the last two weeks whose deep rosters and skilled athletes proved too much for the Blazers. The Blazers took on two conference opponents on the road and a non-conference game at home.

On Friday, November 15th, Cumberland traveled to Richmond to take on the Wellspring Guardians. After falling behind 20-5 in the opening quarter, the Blazers went on to lose 69-45. Corey Hill, Shane Jung, and Ben Pruette provided 12 points each for the Blazers.

The Blazers hosted J. Frank White Academy (Harrogate, TN) for their first home game on Monday. Getting behind early plagued Cumberland in this game as well as they fell behind 22-7 in the first period. The Knights went on to outlast the Blazers 72-49. Shane Jung led the Blazers with 25.

On Friday night, the Blazers hit the road again to take on Bluegrass United in Lexington. A similar story continued for Cumberland as they trailed 21-4 at the end of the first. The Blazers offense was non-existent throughout the game while the Bluehawks held them to only 15 points for the entire game. In the end, Bluegrass United took the win easily 85-15.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we are seeing progress,” said Cumberland head coach Justin Hensley. “All of these teams have deep rosters and more skilled players than us. We’re just going to have to learn to dig deep and use intensity to overcome the skillsets of other teams. I know we can do that, but I think the guys are still figuring that part out. I think we can only get better from here.”

Cumberland (0-4,0-3) will travel to Kingsport, Tennessee, to take on Cedar View Christian on Monday for a 6pm tip before taking a break for the Thanksgiving holiday.
