Blazers Prep for State Tournament

19 Feb 2019 by Justin Hensley

Cumberland Basketball recently complete the regular season with a final week of games that included visits to McCreary Central and Whitley County (KHSAA). The Blazers finished the season 8-24 overall and 4-13 in Kentucky Christian School Athletic Association (KCSAA) play.

Head Coach Justin Hensley says he is pleased with the overall season. “The record book really doesn’t show the whole story,” said Coach Hensley. “We should have been able to convert some of those conference losses into wins. We had a few games where we just didn’t come out and play ball, and a few games where we just fell short.” Cumberland lost at home to Georgetown by 2 points, and lost away to Mount Carmel and Oakdale by a combined 8 points.

The Blazers head out this week to the Mid-America Sports Center in Louisville, KY, to compete in the KCSAA State Tournament in the 2A division. Tournament play will begin on Friday at 10am when Cumberland will take on Mount Carmel. Cumberland lost their only matchup to Mount Carmel this season on January 19th by only 6 points.

“The 2A tournament bracket is full of teams we can play well,” Coach Hensley said about the upcoming weekend. “We had close games against Oakdale and Mount Carmel and we beat Georgetown away and lost at home on a last second layup. If we get out there and hustle, we have a good chance to do well at the tournament.” Annville Christian Academy and the Christian Academy of Lawrenceville (CAL) are also in the 2A bracket.
