Cumberland Drops Two Road Games

The Blazers hit the road this week for back-to-back games against Lakeside (KCAA) and conference rival Madison Christian. Defensively the Blazers kept good pace with both teams but were not able to rev up enough offense for either win.

Monday night’s Lakeside game proved to be a tough challenge for Cumberland. The Falcons brought experienced guards to the perimeter and height to the interior. After a 28-8 first quarter, the Falcons never looked back for an 82-52 victory. Lakeside was led by Cedric Meadow with 23 points. The Falcons 6’7" center Zack Otis put up 18, while guards Mason Ravenscraff and Josiah Hill added 16 each. Shane Jung finished with 24 points with 15 of those coming from behind the arc. Tanner Pilarski added 13.

Tuesday night found the Blazers in Richmond to take on Madison Christian. “We had a chance to watch Jordan and Madison play on video,” said Head Coach Justin Hensley before the game. “We know they have some experienced guards who are quick and can hit the three. They also have a big guy inside that is going to be hard to guard so we have to watch that.” Madison jumped out to a quick start with a 17-6 lead in the first. Cumberland was able to hold the Knights to only 9 points in the second quarter, but were only able to gain 2 points to match. Madison was able to take a commanding lead in the second half for a final score of 68-48. Levi Alexander led the Knights with 30 points. Tanner Pilarski lead the offensive charge for the Blazers with 19.

Assistant Coach Carlo Wahlstedt said after the game that “we are continuing to show progress, but sometimes it is two steps forward and one step back. That is fine early in the season. Even as coaches, we are trying to learn what our personal can do and how they play together. I am confident that we will continue to grow as a team.”

Cumberland (0-3, 0-2) will come home November 15 to take on Annville in a conference matchup scheduled to tip at 7:30pm. The game will be hosted at First Baptist Church in Barbourville, KY.
