Blazers Fall to Crusaders in Season Opener

2 Nov 2018 by Justin Hensley

The Blazers hit the road for their season opener to take on the Jordan Christian Crusaders on Thursday night at the Shopville Park Gym in Somerset. Cumberland came out strong and kept the score tight trailing by only 7 points at the end of the first. The Crusaders came out ready in the second quarter, however, and the Blazers were not able to recover from the 23 point lead held by Jordan at the half. The Crusaders went on to win the contest 80-55.

The Hutton brothers, Jordan and Cody, combined for 32 (18 and 14 respectively) and Dylan Stigall added 13 for the Crusaders. Shane Jung lead the offensive charge for Cumberland with 21 points, with 12 coming in the fourth quarter. Tanner Pilarski added 17 for the Blazers.

“It’s our first game and we knew we would have some bugs to work out,” said head coach Justin Hensley. “Jordan has a veteran team so they gave us a good workout. I saw a lot of things I liked from our team, and obviously a few things we need to work on over the next few weeks.”

Assistant Coach Carlo Wahlstedt added that “this is the most potential we’ve had in the time I’ve been serving as a coach. It will be exciting to see these boys further develop into young men.”

Cumberland is now 0-1 (0-1). The Blazers will be on the road for back-to-back games next week on Monday and Tuesday against non-conference KCAA member Lakeside Christian and conference rival Madison Christian.
