Cumberland Athletics Season Opener a Thriller

11 Sep 2018 by Bruce Jung

Nobody gave Cumberland Athletics much of a prayer against arguably the second best public high school volleyball team in our region of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. However, half way through the second game of the match, North Laurel High School was down by 5 points and had to use both of its time outs to eventually regroup and win 25-23 (2-0).

Everyone in the gymnasium seemed impressed with the quality of players Cumberland Athletics (CA) put out on the floor, especially since it was their first game against an opponent which had already played 17-18 games. Cumberland was led by “Poison” Ivy Greer with a string of stellar serves. The crowd witnessed impressive blocking by Abby (the Deal) Diehl and Alex Cunningham. Zoe Brown demonstrated her digging experience and Brooklyn Jung played her usual quality middle hitter position. Kristin Mitchell provided right-sided hitting and Faith drew (pun intended) rave reviews on her hitting, blocking and scrambling. River Greer provided the setting responsibilities.

North Laurel’s coaches indicated that Cumberland Athletics should fare well against other opponents in the region, although Corbin High School will be a very tough challenge. Lisa Hensley was available for comments after the game, and indicated that the coaches were impressed with their team’s effort, determination and level of play.

The Junior Varsity match was well-fought, but our Cumberland Blazers fell to the North Laurel Jaguars in two games. The coaches pointed out that this was their first game ever and that there were kinks to work out. Nonetheless, it is encouraging to see the developing talent in the organization at the JV level.

Next game for our CA VB Trail Blazers is Thursday night in Williamsburg, KY. See the TeamApp “Games and Events” page for time and location details

Way to go Lady Blazers! You made us all proud!
